Great consistency at this year's World Whiskies Awards
A painstaking set of judging rounds resulted in a wide range of winners in the 2009 World Whiskies Awards, although two were repeats from 2008.

Global Whisky Increase
With the world's economic climate so depressing, it seems that more people are turning to quality whisky. Exports are soaring ahead. 18.1 Million cases. Impressive! We know that South Africa is one of the markets the scots focus on given the fact that our premium whisky demand has shot through the roof.
THREE SHIPS AWARDED INTERNATIONAL GOLD
Three Ships Bourbon Cask Finish, the only 100% South African blended whisky, won gold and Best In Class at the prestigious 2008 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), it was announced in London on June 17th.
Scotch whisky exports sets new record
There was a new export record set for Scotch whisky in 2007 with the equivalent of over one billion bottles shipped from Scotland. South Africa’s rapid rise to the industry’s top 10 continued with exports up a further 9% in value.

Whisky Sells for $54,000
A bottle of 81-year-old Scotch sold for $54,000 at New York's first liquor auction since Prohibition. With the current exchange rate that works out to around R368 000! Ouch! The whisky was distilled at Macallan.
FNB Whisky Live Festival Time...
Cape Town is seriously growing the whisky market with a record attendance at this year's festival. The FNB Whisky Live Festival seems to be going from strenght to strenght. New innovations like the Lexus Ultimate Guided tour led the way.
Whisky Icon passes away...
Michael Jackson, whisky writer and icon in the industry passed away recently. It is with sadness, but memories that will last a lifetime, that we say goodbye to him. He will be missed by all of us.
World Whiskies Awards dished out...
Over 150 top whiskies went head on head to see who comes out tops. Chaired by Dave Broom, this annual selection of the very best proprietary whiskies evolved out of Best of the Best, the biannual tasting held since 2000.
WHISKY AND THE U.S. GOVERNMENT
A confidential folder from a US Navy warship currently involved in operations against Al Qaeda off Somalia has washed up on a beach near Bruichladdich on the Isle of Islay. The yellow folder cover entitled ‘USS Anzio’ and marked ‘Confidential’ was found by walkers at an undisclosed location. Information from within the folder was missing.
OLDEST WHISKY SOLD!!!
The oldest whisky in the world has been sold for 14 850 pounds! The green bottle is unusually small in size and holds about 400ml of liquid. That equates to roughly R 210 000. Can you imagine what you would pay for a dram of this at a bar?
Oldest whisky in the world for sale...
The oldest whisky in the world, albeit a whisky liqueur, is up for sale. It may go for anything between 5000 and 10000 pounds. We know that age makes one pay a premium. In the Cape Town Bascule Bar there is a 50yr old whisky for R15200.... per TOT!
Independent Bottlers' Challenge 2006
The Whisky Magazine's Annual challenge come to this year's FNB Whisky Live Festival. Top of the top independent bottlers' drams will be up for tasting. Whisky Magazine's Damian Riley-Smith will take you through the winners.
